No one can dispute that the best ways to make gold in Guild Wars is to solo farm Hard Mode or Elite dungeons, sell runs, and be a merchant. But if you have not got the skills or inclination to do those things, you can still save and earn quite a bit of gold.
Here’s a list that I posted in a forum some time ago.
- Never buy keys or lockpicks.
- Do not use your free lockpicks in Eye of the North. Use them in Factions and Nightfall Hard mode instead.
- Do not get a taste for Sweets or Alcohol.
- Equip your heroes with collector, imperfect, or common skinned weapons.
- Use Factions and Nightfall tokens to exchange for Identify and Salvage kits.
- Identify all coloured armour. Useful runes will stack up.
- Identify max damage White weapons to increase their sale price.
- Use the cheapest runes for your Heroes, even if it is a Major rune.
- Manage your storage space so you can pick up everything, including Whites. Sell everything.
- Have one set of Superior Salvage, Normal Salvage and Superior Identify in your Xunlai Chest to share between all your characters. This saves you 3 slots per character.
- Make full use of Heroes as storage. Every hero wielding two-handed weapons can carry an off-hand item. Use Heroes to store runes.
- Do Factions, Nightfall and Eye of the North quests. Prophesies quests do not give much gold.
- Do every single Prophesies skill quest for all six core professions, do not spend unnecessary gold on hero skills.
- Use Balthazar Factions from doing PvP to unlock more skills for heroes, instead of buying skills.
- Use Hero Skill Points to get skills for yourself and your heroes.
- Buy and use cheap normal Tomes where possible.
- Capture Elites instead of using Elite Tomes where possible.
- Play through the game instead of being run.
- Hitch a ride on free trial runs when possible. I have gotten free trial runs to LA from Beacon, Sanctum Cay from ToA, full S. Shiverspeak tour (Marhan Grotto too), half Desert tour.
- Use collector armour until you get to the max armour town.
- Dislike the look of 15k armour so you never need to get them.
- Dislike the look of rare skin weapons so you never need to get them.
- Never say no to free sub-optimal Greens and imperfect Golds. Heroes cannot complain.
- Play random quiz games in the major cities for prize gold. I won 2k once.
- Exchange 10 Kournan Pendants for 400gold Exp. scrolls and sell them.
- Keep all useful collector drops, even if you don’t have the number you need now.
- Do not salvage unless you need the materials.
This is a nice list that will be useful for new players
Farming is extremely boring, but doing these small things can accumulate overtime and offer a nice alternative.
6. Identify all coloured armour. Useful runes will stack up.
- I am not sure what you mean by that. I think you are saying to identify armor items that drop, but I don’t quite understand the second sentence. Usually, I either sell IDed armor to the merchant or, if the rune is worth more than the armor (rarely the case), I salvage it and sell to the rune trader. Certainly, you can sell more expensive runes to other players, but I don’t bother to spend my time on that.
8. Use the cheapest runes for your Heroes, even if it is a Major rune.
- I didn’t give any runes to my heroes at all
21. Dislike the look of 15k armour so you never need to get them.
I don’t have any elite armors on my characters.
- haha. I still think my male mesmer 1.5K Tyrian armor is the best
22. Dislike the look of rare skin weapons so you never need to get them.
- Bonus Mission Pack took care of the weapon problem
Some more options:
- Sell your Zaishen Keys. Many PvPers made millions in one day by selling Zaishen Keys (3-5K each)
- Collect your stipend from the Elonian keyless chests every month.
- Sell new minipets (100K+ usually)
- Use forum auctions to sell expensive items you don’t need. It is much more time efficient than in-game selling.
- This is more of a storage trick, but keep in mind that your pvp characters can serve as storage along with their PvP heroes.
“- Collect your stipend from the Elonian keyless chests every month.”
Doh! I’ve forgotten to do that for months!!!
