HDTV vs. BluRay vs. iBook Air

Just when the HDTV vs. BluRay war seems to have a winner with Warner Brothers choosing BluRay, Apple unveiled the iBook Air. Apple has taken the first step to the end of computer’s relationship with optical disk medias. Not dissimilar to how computers parted ways with magnetic disk medias.

They were by no means the first to attempt to make ultra-thin and light-weight (for its time) laptops for true mobility, but once again Apple’s understanding of the market means that they are doing it at the right time. Way back when others were having external CD-ROM drives, the personal computers were still too reliant on CD-ROM and hard disk drives. Now, with flash memory, memory sticks and high speed data connections, perhaps we can say goodbye to the optical disk.

Of course, the launching of the Apple TV 2.0 and iTunes movies goes hand in hand with this approach. While a natural evolution, it must be sounding death knells at the boardrooms of companies with large vested interest in HDTV and BluRay. Some commentators have said that the latest MacExpo did not have a killer product, because they were looking for the new iPod or iPhone. But the latest offerings might just have a deeper an impact on the market for much longer than just a passing fad.
